Metaplugin is a plugin that loads other plugins. As simple as that. Build your own effect networks with this plugin wrapper using any VST/VST3 (and AU, if you’re on Mac) effect you already have on your harddisk. To get you started, a Mid-Side matrix, a fourband crossover filter and a routing plugin are included in the package. This means instant cross-track routing, mid-side, multiband compression/distortion/reverb/… you name it. Of course that’s only the beginning… let your imagination run free, nothing is impossible, from creating your own layered synth sounds to building whole sound generators from scratch using simple modules.
Another favourite use case for Metaplugin is to load VST plugins in Pro Tools (or to load AudioUnits in Pro Tools if you’re on a Mac). Hence, you can use it as a VST to AAX wrapper or an AU to AAX wrapper. While we’re at it: you can also use Metaplugin to load VST plugins in Logic/LogicX (VST to AU wrapper).

The latest release from German developer Cableguys is an LFO-driven volume modulation plugin that improves upon its v3 predecessor with multiband functionality, a simple spectrogram, online preset library, more preset waveshapes and a redesigned interface.
At the bottom left of the GUI is the new Band Split display, wherein up to three frequency bands are defined for processing with their own LFO shapes. The slope of each crossover can be set to 6 or 12dB/octave, and the Zoom button expands the display to fill the whole interface. It’s a simple but effective setup.

The majority of the action takes place in the Waveform display, in which you design your LFO shape by creating (up to 40) nodes and dragging them around, freely or snapped to the grid.
An oscilloscope shows both input and output levels behind the LFO as a real-time audio waveform, making the accurate rhythmic positioning of peaks and troughs a doddle.
Nodes can be shaped between soft and hard, and you can store up to six user waves per preset for instant recall. You also get a range of creative starting points and ‘quick fix’ preset shapes, as well as nudge left and right buttons, plus ‘Randomize’ and ‘Mirror on X/Y-axis’ options in the right-click menu.
The LFO can sync to host tempo (1/128 to 32 bars) or run free (0.02Hz to 5.24kHz), with playback position either slaved to the host DAW or retriggered by MIDI note input.

The Shaper things to come

So what can you actually do with all this? Beyond the obvious ‘trancegate’ and rhythmic chopping effects, one of its most useful and successful applications is the creation of sidechain compression-style effects, with the Ducking preset wave selection giving six templates with which to start, and far more detailed shaping being possible than you’d get from a triggered compressor.
The new multiband functionality means you can also tailor the ducking to occur only in a certain frequency range – in the bass, say.
Beyond that, you’ve got frequency-based removal or isolation of hi-hats, kick drums, etc, (by setting the LFO cycle to ‘grab’ those target elements in a loop) and envelope shaping of single drums by MIDI-triggering the LFO in 1-Shot mode (shortening just the higher frequencies of a kick drum, say).
VolumeShaper 4 is a potent tool for mixing and reshaping, then, and it makes easy certain tasks that could be fiddly and imprecise using other tools.
On the creative front, plenty of fun’s to be had cranking the LFO rate up to very high speeds, too, generating glitchtastic amp mod distortion across the whole signal or just specific frequency ranges.
There are, of course, a few niggles. Although each of the three bands can be soloed by pressing its S button, the bypass switch is buried in the right-click menu – we’d prefer a button.
Also, time and frequency scales in the waveform and Band Split display are notable by their absence (although a mouse-over tooltip on the Band Splits does at least reveal their frequency); and – as with all Cableguys plugins – there’s no manual.
It’s not a difficult plugin to get to grips with by any means, but documentation is a must with any piece of software.
Ultimately, VolumeShaper 4 is a versatile and powerful rhythm- and dynamics-manipulating tool at a very fair price.

Audio Damage has announced the release of Quanta, a new Granular Synthesizer plug-in for macOS and Windows (with an iOS version coming soon)
Feature Highlights:
Granulate
Quanta is a full-featured ten-voice true stereo granular synthesizer, with up to a hundred 1000ms grains per voice, and full control over the grain state, with direct randomization and modulation of most parameters. Drag-and-drop a sample (WAV, AIFF, Ogg, or FLAC) on to the window and go to work.
Synthesize
With two multi-mode filters (with LP, HP, BP and notch in 2-pole and 4-pole topologies), and a “sidecar” virtual-analog oscillator and noise generator that can be used in addition to, or injected into, the grain engine, Quanta is a fully capable subtractive synth in its own right, and will work as a granular or subtractive (or both) synth without any sample at all.
Modulate
Quanta has mod coming out its ears. First up are four of our new FEGs (Flexible Envelope Generator), a 99-point looping function generator with optional host tempo sync. Then add two arbitrary-waveshape LFOs, a multi-source sample-and-hold module, and fully user-controllable MIDI assignments, with nearly every control on the panel as a destination.
Control
Quanta is customizable to your taste and playing style. With full MPE support, it can take advantage of the extended control set of your Linnstrument, Seaboard, Soundplane, Continuum, or other MPE controller, and support for TUN files lets you use tuning tables. The resizable Hi-DPI GUI lets you adjust the size to match your visual needs, and the cross-platform preset mechanism lets you share your creations with your friends and collaborators, no matter what system they are using.

A true powerhouse of audio warfare, Grind puts the “damage” in Audio Damage. From subtle tube-style saturation to full-on mangled wavetable distortion, Grind is a Swiss Army Knife of sound design.
Grind consists of three main blocks: wavetable lookup, in to algorithmic saturation/distortion/, and finally to a multi-mode filter. The wavetable module uses the amplitude of the incoming signal to replace the sample with one from 15 different linearly-interpolated wavetables, chosen for their mangling potential. Window size and phase controls provide further tone-shaping possibilities.
The next stop is the algorithm module, with eleven different distortion and saturation algorithms, from simple soft-knee saturation on up to full on sine warping.
After this, the signal passes through a multi-mode filter stage, with eleven different filter models to choose from, including “vintage digital” versions from the early days of plugin development, on up to our modern analog-modeled MS20-style lowpass and highpass synth filters. A tempo-synced LFO provides motion for the filter frequency, and a final stage of soft clipping and DC filtering tames the output.
Make no mistake: this is not a subtle, polite tool. With careful tuning of the provided presets, it can be tamed to normal filtering and saturation duties, but on the whole, it is a noisy, snorting beast of a plug-in, and is happiest with Full Metal audio destruction.
Audio Damage has updated its Grind wavetable distortion and sound-shaping plugin for Windows, Mac and iOS.
Version 1.1 features a redesigned GUI with a new font for better legibility. Some controls were moved so that the interface better matches the signal flow.
Grind has been rebuilt with all current SDKs and a problem was fixed where filter type wasn’t reloading correctly. Note that any existing saves with previous versions will resolve to 4PLP filter until you re-save the session.
